How to Brew Loose-Leaf Tea Without Fancy Equipment

Curious about loose-leaf tea, but don't want another gadget in your kitchen? A mug and a fine strainer are enough to start. If you already have an infuser or French press, those work too.

Brewing loose-leaf tea comes down to four steps: measure, add water, steep, and strain. Here is how to do it with equipment you may already own, using Sol de Mayo and Flor de Jamaica as examples.

What you need

  • Your loose-leaf tea
  • A teaspoon for measuring
  • A kettle or another way to heat water
  • A heat-safe mug or brewing vessel
  • A fine strainer, tea infuser, or French press
  • A timer

A dedicated tea set is optional. Choose heat-safe equipment and a strainer fine enough to catch the pieces in your blend.

Method 1: Brew in a mug and strain

  1. Measure the tea into a heat-safe mug or jug.
  2. Add water following your blend's brewing instructions.
  3. Set a timer and let the tea steep.
  4. Pour through a fine strainer into a second mug. Remove the leaves when the steeping time is complete.

This is an easy place to start if you already have a kitchen strainer. Keep the strainer steady as you pour.

Method 2: Use a tea infuser

Put the measured tea into your infuser, place it in your mug, and add water. Give the leaves room rather than packing the infuser tightly. When the timer finishes, lift the infuser out.

Method 3: Use a French press

Start with a clean French press, measure in the tea, and add water according to the blend's instructions. After steeping, lower the plunger gently and pour the tea into your cup. If fine pieces pass through the mesh, use a fine strainer as you pour.

Two Aeon Teä blends to start with

Blend Amount Steeping time Caffeine
Sol de Mayo 1 teaspoon 4–6 minutes, using boiled water Naturally contains caffeine
Flor de Jamaica 2 teaspoons 3–5 minutes; 7–10 minutes for a stronger infusion Naturally caffeine-free

These are the instructions for these specific Aeon Teä blends. Other teas can require different amounts, temperatures, and steeping times. Follow the directions for the blend you choose.

Choose your flavor

Sol de Mayo combines earthy Argentinian yerba mate with orange peel. It is a naturally caffeinated option when you want a change from your usual morning cup.

Flor de Jamaica blends hibiscus, strawberry, ginger, and stevia leaf for a lightly sweet, fruity cup. Try it over ice for a fruity, naturally caffeine-free cup.

What if your first cup isn't quite right?

Start with the blend's recommended amount and steeping time. Taste before adding anything else. Adjust one thing at a time on your next brew so you can learn what you enjoy. For Flor de Jamaica, use the longer recommended steep when you prefer a stronger infusion.
